Farrans shortlisted for Bridge Contractor of the Year at NCE Bridges Awards
Farrans has been shortlisted in the Bridge Contractor of the Year category at the NCE Bridges Awards which will be held on 17 July 2025 at the Hilton Bankside, London.
Last year, Farrans delivered three moving bridges across the UK. Two of the bridges, Gull Wing and Govan, opened on the same day in September 2024.
Gull Wing
Opened by The Princess Royal, Gull Wing is an example of civil engineering at its most technically complex. Built for Suffolk County Council, it is the world’s largest rolling bascule bridge, getting to the limits of what is achievable with hydraulic cylinders. Its 386t counterweight is made of concrete and is contained in twin steel structure J-beams beside the roadway. The bridge opens within 116 seconds and closes in 106 seconds, 10 times a day, 365 days a year for its 120 year design life.
Govan to Partick Bridge
The Govan-Partick Bridge, one of Europe’s longest opening pedestrian crossings, was delivered on time and on budget in September 2024 for Glasgow City Council, re-establishing an historic connection. This 99-metre cable-stayed swing bridge features a 650-tonne moving span and a 45-tonne fixed span.
Herring Bridge
Herring Bridge is a nationally significant infrastructure project and one of the largest complex civil engineering schemes undertaken by Norfolk County Council (NCC). Delivered by BAM-Farrans Joint Venture (BFJV), this complex design, civil and structural engineering project encompassed a double leaf bascule bridge and upgrade to 2.8km of highway infrastructure. The bridge was delivered within the client’s budget of £121m. Herring Bridge significantly eases traffic congestion, shortening journey times and removing HGV’s from passing through the centre.
