Winning Streak: Sustainable Ireland Award for Connswater Project

28th November 2017

The impressive winning streak continues for Farrans, with the Connswater Community Greenway Project receiving the 'Environmental Initiative' award at the Sustainability Ireland Energy, Environmental and Waste Management Awards last week.

Farrans picked up the award at a glittering black tie event at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Belfast.

The Connswater Project, which claimed an Environmental Sustainability CEF Award last month, is proving to be an outstanding case study for environmental best practice in the industry.

The Community Greenway project focused on the enhancement of a neglected and polluted river channel in East Belfast. The team adopted a holistic, dedicated approach to environmental management throughout the works.

Environmental Management: The Stats

Over the course of the project, Farrans planted 1,105 new native trees and 7,267 new shrubs, as well as significantly improving the water quality in the Connswater, Loop and Knock Rivers.

Committed to sending minimal material to landfill, a 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' policy saw the reuse of 24,000T of revetment stone and 3,731m3 of topsoil.

The environmentally-conscious team also ensured that all wood used on the greenway's 2km of handrail was sustainably sourced.

328 trees were also removed during the project, with 50% mulched for landscaping, 10% cut for animal habitats and 40% relocated and replanted.

In line with Farrans' Eco Efficiency Drive Initiative, 25% of electricity consumed on site was generated from renewable sources - with more than 80% of that coming from wind power.

And, proving that Farrans is always committed to a 'hands-on' approach, the team-members were applauded for their use of 6 site bikes to navigate the 9km cycleway on a daily basis!

Sustainable Ireland Awards: Record High

With 16 separate categorises, the Annual Awards are widely regarded as the premier event in the Irish Environmental, Waste Management and Energy sectors, attracting entries, support and sponsorship from all the leading industry players.

Farrans' success within the Environmental Initiative category comes as the Awards reported a record number of entries and attendees on the night.
